The NEC CDR-30A is the updated version of the CD-ROM drive unit for the PC Engine CD-ROM² System, an add-on that made the PC Engine the first home console to use CD-ROMs.

Released alongside the revised IFU-30A interface unit in 1989, the CDR-30A represented a refinement of the original 1988 design, rather than a major change.

• Function: The CDR-30A is the CD drive component of the CD-ROM² System, which connects to the PC Engine console via the IFU-30A interface unit.

• Standalone Audio Player: It can function as a standalone CD player for music, featuring a headphone jack and a line-level output for stereo systems.

• Known Issues: Due to age, the center gear in the CDR-30A's drive mechanism can swell and disintegrate, preventing it from reading discs. Capacitors, especially near the audio section, can also leak. These are well-known issues among retro collectors, with replacements available.
