The GunCon (short for "Gun Controller," officially designated as model NPC-103) is the legendary light gun released by Namco in 1997 for the Sony PlayStation. Unlike competing light guns of the era, the GunCon became the gold standard for home arcade shooters due to its high precision, ergonomic design modeled after a modern pistol, and innovative technology.

The GunCon was built to support Namco’s premier arcade hits. While it works natively with games specifically programmed for it, standard light gun games that required a Justifier (like Lethal Enforcers) are typically incompatible unless patched. Key compatible titles include:

Display Limitation: Like most analog-era light guns, the original NPC-103 GunCon relies on CRT televisions to process its timing signals properly. It will not function on modern flat-screen panels (LCD, LED, OLED) without specialized retro-conversion hardware or modern aftermarket light gun solutions (such as Sinden Lightguns or RetroShooter).
Legacy: The success of the NPC-103 paved the way for future iterations like the GunCon 2 (NPC-106) for the PlayStation 2 and the GunCon 3 for the PlayStation 3, cementing Namco's hardware legacy in the arcade-at-home genre.
